Nature Protection Area Radolfzeller Aach

By Christoph Moning

The area of the Radolfzeller Aach is rather inaccessible. Hence it is difficult to observe many of the interesting breeding species. The shallow water in front of the river mouth is most interesting in late summer. The area is part of the 'Important Bird Area Radolfzeller Aachmündung and Mettnau including the Markelfinger Winkel'.

Requirements:

Attainable with public means of transport: Yes, if combined with a bike.

Equipment: binoculars and a scope

Accessibility of the area: The reed beds of the Radolfzeller Aach are rather inaccessible but the mouth of the river can be easily observed from Moos.

Interesting species:

During late autumn and winter Common Snipe, Teal, Shoveler and Wigeon as well as large numbers of Great Crested Grebes can be observed at the Radolfzeller Aach. Even more uncommon waterfowl like Smew, Long-tailed Duck or Velvet Scoter can be seen occasionally. During the breeding season Black-necked Grebe, Gadwall, Garganey, Pochard, Red-crested Pochard, Marsh Harrier, Eurasian Hobby, Water Rail, Spotted Crake, Kingfisher, Nightingale, Stonechat, Grasshopper, Savi’s, Eurasian Reed and Great Reed Warbler, Bearded and Penduline Tit as well as Red-backed Shrike can be found in the area.

Habitats:

The Lower stretches of the Radolfzeller Aach are including riverine Bush and reed beds, meadows and shallow water of the Zeller Lake.

How to get there:

By rail and bike: The next station is at Radolfzell (3.5 km to Moos).

By car: The area is situated southwest of Radolfzell. The road between Radolfzell and Moos leads directly through the area.

Birding:

At every time of the year the jetty of the marina in Moos (X) offer good views over the river mouth and the shallow water in front of the reed beds.
